bstructive airway diseases are on the rise. The spectrum ranges from the reversible asthamatic conditions to the chronic pulmonary obstructive diseases; the partially reversible bronchitis and the irreversible emphysema. Airways are narrowed to stimuli and the narrowing is suspected of being produced by the mast cells in the airway. Stimuli are the general precipitating factors. Exogenous allergens, endogenous metabolic toxins, drug allergy, some disease like tuberculosis of lung may act as precipitating factors. Asthma is a condition of airway narrowing in response to hyper activity to certain stimuli which produces inflammation also. The triggering stimuli can be anything from dust mites to exercise. Asthmatic attacks vary in frequency and severity. Sometimes, it can be produced without definite allergies. Stress and anxiety trigger mast cells to release histamin and leukotriens. Eosinophils can also be a contributory factor. Severe asthamtic attacks may bring oxygen defficiency which can produce lethargy, confusion, cynosis etc. No permanent cure is so far been developed. Beta-adrenergic receptor agonists, theophylline, corticosteroids, cromolyn, nedocromil, anti-cholinergic drugs and leukotriene modifiers are commonly employed. Beta-adrenergic receptors agnoists may lead to tachycarida, muscle tremors, restlesness and headache; theophylline may produce life threatening heart rhythms, insomina and seizure; and corticosteroids may produce poor wound healing, stunned growth in children, loss of calcium from bone, stomach bleeding, premautre cataract, elevated blood sugar, hunger, weight gain and mental problems.
